This pretty little oasis- near the city of Dunhuang in Gansu province, China- is said to be 2000 years old. The crescent-shaped lake has a pagoda next to it and a few shops. It is surrounded by elegant sand dunes that are collectively called the Echoing Sand Mountain. The dunes create a kind of singing sound when people tread or slide on the surfaces, and that’s how they get the beautiful name. The region is part of the Gobi Desert and barely gets any rainfall. In fact, over the last few decades, the lake was steadily losing water, until the government stepped in and took steps to restore it.
