The Great Living Chola Temples in Tamil Nadu are the creations of the Chola dynasty kings. They were constructed way back in the 11th and 12th centuries and have withstood the ravages of time. The Chola kings, who ruled for over 250 years, were innovative builders. They built many temples of which this group of three-the Brihadisvara temple at Thanjavur, the Temple of Gangaikonda Cholapuram and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram- is exceptional. These are granite temples and are dedicated to Shiva. They exemplify the Dravida style of architechture and bronze casting.
